One of our favorite aspects of the Christmas season, each and every year, are the stories. Stories handed down through the years, such as A Christmas Carol or The Night Before Christmas, the stories of our family holidays in the past, the stories in the Bible of the Birth of Christ. In our Advent series, Tell Me The Stories, we will seek to connect with the stories of our faith in new ways.
The Reformation was noted for having 5 particular emphases, known as the “Five Solas,” (‘Sola’ being the latin word for ‘Alone’) which we’ll be looking at over the next 5 weeks. They are Scripture Alone, Faith Alone, Grace Alone, for the Glory of God Alone, and Christ Alone.
So often in the church today, we narrowly associate stewardship with finances, and specifically with church budgets. But doing so keeps us from seeing the bigger picture of the stewardship to which God is inviting us. When we realize that stewardship is about more than finances – including relationships, talents and abilities, our natural resources and time – we begin to see that by living life as a good steward, we begin to experience the fullness of life that God intended for us from the beginning. Ultimately, stewardship is an issue of discipleship, not church budgets.
There are seven passages of scripture that carry the designation, “Great.” Many of these passages are familiar, some are not. But each one holds a wealth of wisdom and insight into who we are to be as Christians, as a Church, and how we are to carry the Gospel into the world.
